Counter-Strike Source

It’s been just over a day since Valve released the Counter-Strike source beta upon the world. Or, at least it was released to the participants of the Valve Cyber Café program.

Those who have tested it seem to be optimistic about the direction the game is going. The game is absolutely gorgeous, and brings Counter-Strike as we know it to an entirely new level. The interaction with the world, other players, and the weapons and tools at your disposal are extended – providing much more realistic and open-ended gameplay.

It’s only a few days from now that those who purchased Condition Zero will have access to the limited beta. In the meantime, check out this footage from in-game:

Quakecon Doom 3 64-Man Single Elimination

The first round of Doom 3 1v1s begins momentarily with a round of 64-man Single Elimination. While there was some confusion because some players who advanced by forfeit victory were not included in the bracket, Quakecon decided to push the tournament forward and add in those players against opponents who had byes. That means some fireworks with single elimination as either Daler and FFSmasher will go home and many other high level gamers will be out of luck.

Daler managed one of the highest frag totals of anyone, taking home a strong 7th place, but he must face FFSmasher, another star quaker, in an elimination match in the first round. FFSmasher put up a solid 20 frags in the toughest FFA of them all where he, carnage (21 frags) and DeviantDuck (20 frags) all advanced, but his seed does not seem to reflect that number - and many others seeds do not, either.

While Railz, with the second highest frag total, received a bye, Wombat took the theoretical number one seed and is rewarded with a round one matchup. Instead, spaced, who put up a respectable 21 frags landing him 27th overall on the list, does not have a round one matchup. With so many seemingly random seeds and decisions and strong players such as cha0ticz facing high seed opponents after advancing by forfeit, there is a huge potential for many top Doomers to not even make it out of single elimination, and the Daler vs. FFSmasher game really shows that.

The only game in town so far continues to roll on with a full slating of matches over the next couple of days. GGL’s best match comes later tonight as two Quakecon players with mixed results do battle in an important ladder test, Railz against FFSmasher. Other double elimination players from Quakecon also will be getting back into the swing of things as carnage, Jaguar and Thump4 play in matches later today.

With school getting underway for many of the bigger names it will be interesting to see which players continue to practice hard for the coming CPL and obviously for GGL’s playoffs. Most of the players still face a tough unknown crowd of players looking to make their name in the community. The game is still only a few weeks old leaving anyone with a shot of winning matches against players with early names.

22 matches are on tap tonight but expect that to go up as people collect in #ggl-doom3 for instant matches. Like many, FFSmasher (6-0) pulls double duty tonight against two tough opponents. Railz (7-0) of CS glory before, team Cyberglobe’s leader, takes on FFSmasher who then follows that up with a match against Morrison, an older Quake player.

FFSmasher was expect to do well at Quakecon before receiving a nasty opening round single elimination match against Daler. The possible top 8 finisher was left to Quake 3 after the early exit to the eventual second place finisher. Railz should be a good test for FFSmasher as he finished with the second highest frag total after the FFA rounds but did fair as well suffering two tough upsets.

Brazilian animalboy (6-0) has been an early surprise reaching the 20th spot on the ladder. Tonight he faces another player from Quakecon in well known Carnage (1-0). Carnage’s Quakecon run was more of a question mark after he missed his second round winner's bracket match forcing him to drop into the loser’s bracket where he was able to win a few tough matches before exiting early.

Thump4 (3-0) and Jaguar (1-0) are both Quakecon surprises as they advanced far into the tournament. Thump4 was the receiver of the Carnage forfeit and finished 7th-8th after losing to elpajuo. Jaguar had a similar experience early on in the loser bracket facing elpajuo, the eventually 5th-6th finisher. Jaguar, although he may not like it, will also be referred to as Daler’s brother but has been the only Price to shine so far in the GGL ladder as he sits as 56th with his brother not active.

Doom3 early morning call allows some to sneak in

Earlier morning turned into a cattle race as Doom3 registration opened up for a brief period. Players raffled on the list last night were required to confirm their spots this morning at 8am with only 72 of the initial 200, including the waiting list players, actually showing. Since that was under 128 players, 56 new players were allowed to sign up with only those who were there at the time being able to stilling leaving out some big names.

This announcement created a massive rush as some of the best looked to sneak on the list. Among the more notables Daler, cl0ck and cha0ticz all happen to be around at the time and now will challenge Wombat and the others who did show up. The brackets and the new player list will be announced in the coming hour.

This turn of events could actually help the tourney itself bringing in more interest from those looking to get a feel for the new game. Other news around Quakecon has been just as interesting with plenty of people playing in side Doom3 events.

Fatal1ty has made quite a bit of noise beating many at the showcase shootout event for ABit. Although he missed his chance to get signed up for the official tournament because of the shootout. Even still Daler beat Fatal1ty during one of the showcase matches, 3-1, and is currently the only player who has defeated him. His perfection of the other day is long gone with other players including bodieS dropping two frags on him throughout the day.

NVidia has also been running small Free-all tournaments with tons of winners. This morning after check-ins Wombat dominated a Free-all getting his first blood of the weekend. This should set the stage for a good final few matches if the players can avoid facing each other early on during the tournament.
